Cyanide: gold minings devastating killer

چکیده
Cyanide is highly toxic Cyanide is one of the most toxic chemical substances on Earth. Cyanide is toxic to most aquatic life and humans, even at low concentrations. Its use in gold mining is controversial. The extreme toxicity of cyanide arises from its readiness to react with other elements and hence interfere with normal biological processes. Cyanide gas is a biological weapon and was used in European Nazi extermination camps in World War II. Cyanide compounds do occur naturally in low doses in some foods, for example, in bitter almonds. Excesses or extracts of these have long been known to be toxic. (Moran, 2004)

Leaching of gold ores with high cyanicides: a physico-chemical modeling approach
Processing of gold ores with high sulfide minerals is problematic as they consume cyanide and reduce gold leaching. Optimization of gold leaching and cyanide consumption requires a methodology to estimate the amount of exposed cyanicides, their leaching kinetics, and speciation of cyanide complexes that consume the free cyanide and compete with gold. In this paper, a physico-chemical approach i...
متن کاملComparative Cyanide and Thiourea Extraction of Gold Based on Characterization Studies (TECHNICAL NOTE)
This study involved preliminary laboratory test work to identify the relative leaching response to cyanidation and thiourea leaching of an oxidized low grade gold ore based on characterization studies. Huge reserves of gold deposits have been reported from different parts of Iran, especially at Neishaboor area with gold grade of approx 4 ppm. For the mineralogical composition, the nature of the...
متن کاملComparison of Adsorption Properties of Activated Carbons with Different Crops Residues as Precursors for Gold Cyanide Recovery: An Iranian Gold Industry Guide
Adsorption of gold cyanide on three types of Activated Carbons (ACs) has been investigated in batch and column adsorption conditions. Applied ACs have been derived from different crops precursors i.e., coconut shell (CAC), peach stone (PAC), and walnut shell (WAC). As peach stone and walnut shells are abundant agricultural residues in Iran, the activated carbons produced from these precurso...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Cyanidation Leaching of Gold in a Waste Rock Ore
Samples of the waste rock obtained from Marofengin South Africa ground 60, 70 and 80% passing 75µm were leached with cyanide in bottle roll tests. The results obtained showed that the percentage gold dissolution depends more on the ore size consists than on the cyanide concentration with the highest average dissolution rates of 88.75, 94.34 and 95.90% found at 600, 500 and 500 ppm, for 60, ...
متن کاملDETERMINATION OF THE OPTIMUM CONDITIONS FOR RECOVERY OF GOLD FROM ZARSHURAN REFRACTORY GOLD SULFIDE ORE
The orthogonal array design has been used to determine the optimum conditions for gold recovery from Zarshuran refractory gold sulfide ore (Iran) by direct cyanidation and roasting-cyanidation. The Taguchi method was used as the experimental design to determine the optimum conditions of dissolution behavior of gold with cyanidation and roasting-cyanidation from Zarshuran refractory gold ore .
